4 Great Character Introductions in Film

Humphrey Bogart as Rick BlaineYou’ve got a great film hero and you’re just dying to make audiences fall in love with the character. How do you make that happen effectively? Introducing a character is no easy task, but it helps that there are dozens of examples of great introductions in film.

The best character introductions have a few things in common. They are efficiently shot, with nothing in the frame going to waste. They tell the audience the essentials about the character, usually without a lot of dialogue. And they get viewers invested not only in the character, but the film as a whole.

The list below is by no means comprehensive, but it represents what comes to my mind when I think of great character introductions. This being a purely subjective list, it is tinted heavily by my love of pop culture. That said, I do think that each of them stand out as great moments in cinema. Continue reading


The Tasmanian Devil versus the Oompa Loompas

That's a lot of potential food for Taz.The Tasmanian Devil qualifies for this section for besting Animal back in the day. He’s a cartoon icon who eats anything and everything, much like the real-life species he’s based on. He’ll be facing off against an entire army in this one, as Willy Wonka’s Oompa Loompas take him on. The Oompa Loompas have previously defeated the Munchkins. Can they stop the Tasmanian Devil, or will Taz turn this fight into a slaughter of epic proportions?

Munchkins versus Oompa Loompas

Attack of the little people.Short fantastic creatures, both the munchkins and the Oompa loompas are the products of ridiculous children’s stories. Munchkins come from the land of Oz and are generally pleasant fellows who sing all day. Oompa loompas work for Willy Wonka, and are slightly more vicious critters who serve mainly as bouncers and bodyguards for the purple-clad goit. Dangerous creatures, a pack of Oompa Loompas can skeletalize a cow in under three minutes.
