ShalillyElizabeth Gracen has led a fascinating life filled with art in many different forms. What has she been up to in recent years? The second part of my interview with her covers the end of the Highlander franchise, her work as a director, and her debut as a fantasy novelist.

Q&A with Elizabeth Gracen, part one

Posted in Random Blogness with tags , , on November 21, 2016 by Charlie Brooks

Amanda and MethosSo how accurate was my take on Highlander: The Raven? Elizabeth Gracen, who starred in that show and played Amanda in Highlander: The Series, already corrected me on one point and was gracious enough to answer some additional questions for me. Ms. Gracen provided her take on Highlander, the behind-the-scenes issues of The Raven, and the projects she’s taken on after stepping away from acting.

The interview comes in two parts on www.ChBrooks.com. Part one is now up and focuses mainly on how she got involved in the world of Highlander and what sort of issues plagued The Raven.

Random Blogness: Eye Horror

Posted in Random Blogness with tags , , on August 21, 2015 by Charlie Brooks

Eye CloseupI’m trying out contacts for the first time in my life. I’ve been wanting to wear contacts for at least 15 years, but my severe astigmatism makes my corneas look like Madonna’s pointy bra from the 1990s. Special weighted lenses have always cost too much.

However, technology marches on and has brought the price of those lenses down while my salary has increased significantly over the years. At 18, I lived on a sack of potatoes and some Mountain Dew for a week. Now in my mid-30s, I have enough disposable income that I can buy my kids a sack of potatoes every day if I wanted to – yes, I’m pretty wealthy if wealth is measured in the number of consecutive days you can buy bulk potatoes. Also, I can now afford those long sought-after contact lenses.

Umber HulkAfter a six month layoff, my Night Below game which has since become a bastardized version of the Wrath of the Righteous adventure path got rolling again. The assault on Dragonguard Keep gained some momentum, and our heroes came one step closer to breaking up one of the bases of power of Derrezen the dragon-god.

Where Memory Lane and Rejection Road Meet

My house has too much stuff in it. I’ve been going through my possessions and deciding what needs to go. Finally, I came across my Big Box o’ Rejections:

Rejection Box

Hello, old friend.

When I first started writing, I decided to save all my rejection letters as a way to keep myself motivated. But now that rejections come electronically and are almost exclusively form letters – and now that I have a lengthy publications list – I don’t feel that I need it anymore. So this box has got to go.

The box itself contains rejections, old drafts of stories from writing workshops, and a few magazines and newspapers where I got my first publishing credits. As I sorted through old letters, I got the most enjoyment out of reading some old rejection letters from my high school days, when I wrote articles for Dragon Magazine.

Random Blogness: More Mythic Adventures

Posted in Pathfinder, Random Blogness, Role-Playing Games with tags , , , , , , , on September 8, 2014 by Charlie Brooks

Mythic AdventuresWhen I decided to start running Paizo’s Wrath of the Righteous adventure path, I didn’t plan to make use of the mythic rules. I didn’t really want to learn a whole set of new rules, and I didn’t see what mythic added that high-level play couldn’t already do. My wife Sarah encouraged me to do it because she wanted some new options for her sorcerer, and in retrospect I’m now glad she did. The mythic portion of the campaign is admittedly still young, but so far this stuff is awesome. Continue reading

Random Blogness: Expedition to the Dragonlands

Not the Bees!I’m way behind on a lot of things, so I figured I would ramble about my long-running Pathfinder game for a while and update the player who missed the last session at the same time.

For the past six years, I’ve been running my Night Below campaign. This started as an adaptation of the AD&D boxed set Night Below: An Underdark Campaign in D&D 3.5 and has since moved on to the Pathfinder system and a high-level adaptation of the Wrath of the Righteous adventure path. Spoilers for the latter are present in this post.
