The saying about the Phoenix is that it rises from the ashes, but it doesn’t seem likely that the folks who originally piloted this boat realized just how many fires it would be through. Outside, the boat looks like a hunk of junk. The hull is dented and patched in several spots, scorch marks mar the nose, and most of the parts have been torn off and replaced more time than most can count. The insides are ordered well enough, although the engine has seen better days and the control panels have burn marks from the fires that have occurred on the inside.
Phoenix flew in the war…for about 15 minutes before being shot down over an uninhabited moon. The commander of the Alliance warship that took her down had the crew killed on the spot but saved the ship. Turned out he had a soft spot for the Hummingbirds, and had it fixed up for his private collection. That lasted for about a year before the officer became a casualty at the battle of Serenity Valley. The ship, and all the other vessels in his private collection, was auctioned off after the war by his sons. It fell into the hands of members of the Tong, where it served as a smuggling vessel for three years. When the Tong went through a period of upheaval, the ship was gunned down and the passengers were once again murdered. For two more years, the ship passed through a number of different owners until one day the smuggler Yuri Godzinko stole the ship away from its owners and took off for Boros. Unfortunately, while Yuri knew a lot about smuggling and stealing, he didn’t know the first thing about piloting. He crashed the ship right into the surface of Boros shortly before being arrested. The ship was seized by the authorities, but they decided that it wasn’t worth the time to repair and sent it to th junkyard. That’s where Gus “Pack Rat” Henderson found it, repainted it, and put it on sale for his shipyard.
Unfortunately for Gus, stories have begun circulating about the poor fate of the crews that take on Phoenix as a home. He has been trying to move it for quite a while with no success. He bills it as a sleek, fast ride that can take you anywhere in the Black in the blink of an eye, the type of boat that belongs to daring souls looking for adventure. He tries to gloss over the fact that those souls who have sought adventure aboard Phoenix have usually died, burst into flame, or both. His routine hasn’t become quite so polished that people don’t notice the boat’s history, though.

Hummingbird Class Transport Ships: Named for their light weight, excellent speed, and precise maneuverability, Hummingbird Class ships are slightly smaller and more maneuverable than Firefly vessels. They saw most use in the early days of the Unification War. Small and relatively light, these boats were used for cargo runs in particularly dangerous battle areas. Their speed and evasiveness allowed them to outrun most enemy craft, and their maneuverability in tight spaces allowed them to fly low across the surface of worlds and under enemy radar. They have become less commonly used since the war due to their limited cargo capacity. They are occasionally seen in airshows, as their easily maneuverable thrust engines give skilled pilots the opportunity to perform a number of tricks, including the infamous “Crazy Ivan.”
