The Red Mage

Warring against the gods themselves, the Red Mage is deadly indeed.The great red wyrm Derrezen is believed to have been the mightiest dragon to walk the world or fly in its skies. As the most powerful being in existence, he arrogantly saw the world itself as his domain. To that end he slew dragons and men alike, and even supposedly made war upon the gods themselves. He single-handedly destroyed human kingdoms when they dared begin to incur on his domain (which was everywhere, as he saw it) and warped the land with powerful magic. It took many valiant heroes to finally visit death upon him, and those heroes also lost their life in the process. Upon his death, the gods themselves intervened, using divine magic to ensure that he could not be resurrected. Even despite this barrier, a piece of Derrezen clawed its way back into the world of the living.

Derrezen’s followers, a group of worshippers known as the Crimson Claw, sought his return. They could not restore the wyrm to his full glory, but they did manage to harness a piece of his consciousness. The dragon’s high priest sacrificed his own soul to capture a piece of Derrezen’s spirit in his body, creating the Red Mage. Although he was weaker than before and had lost some of his combat prowess, Derrezen still instantly became one of the most powerful beings on the face of the planet.

The Red Mage is middle-aged but strong and healthy for his age. He has a bald head and dresses in red robes and a red cloak. Thoroughly ruthless and calculating, he has all of Derrezen’s personality and much of his power, but must live with the knowledge that he now has the frailties of a human as well. Due to the intervention of the gods, even a wish spell is incapable of restoring him fully.

The Red Mage’s primary goal is somehow returning to draconic form permanently. To that end, he uses the Crimson Claw, which sees his as a god incarnate, to seek out ancient artifacts and magic. He doesn’t care who he must go through in order to accomplish his goals, but is aware enough of his own weaknesses to flee and regroup if necessary. The Red Mage feels that the world itself is his birthright. He hopes to conquer the known lands and return to being a power that even gods feared. Those who would stop him are obviously traitors, for challenging the mighty Derrezen over what is rightfully his is tantamount to treason. With all the wisdom, magic, and cunning of a dragon and the human need to act swiftly, the Red Mage is one of the most dangerous beings in the known world.
